Fix for VBScript Error When Installing iTunes/Quicktime on Vista
The iTunes/QuickTime installer will fail with a "VBScript not installed" error on some installations of Vista. I'm not sure exactly what leads to this situation as it does not seem to affect all Vista users, but there is a relatively simple fix:
- Click Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and select "Run as Administrator"
- cd to your windows\system32 directory
- enter the following command:
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
This will re-register VBScript and allow the iTunes installer to run.

Thank you very much for this fix. I can't believe how easy it was with your instructions. I really appreciate it. Thanks again
I can not believe this. I have been searching for a fix to this for months and I finally found your page. My Itunes 7.1.1 is running now thanks to you. I appreciate this very much.

also i did right click "run as administrator" but i dont get it when the person who gave the instruction said after right clicking "cd to"???
thanks hope to get a reply

Do you have a fix for Windows Xp? I tried to use the same command in Xp at c:\windows\system32 and I received an error message.
RegisterServer in vbscript.dll failed. Return code was 0X80004005

I need help with vbscript for itunes
My god ur a genius! After many frustrating hours of trying to fix this u had me up an running in 2 minutes! I never bother to post to these things but I had to let you know u are awesome! Many Thanks!!!!!
I followed your instructions but it did not work for me. When I click run as administrator a black box opens that just say c:/user my name....I entered the command you listed and it reads regsvr32 vbscript.dll is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Please help!!
You have to get to your windows directory. Usually cd.. to root of c:> then you go to windows\sytem32 etc...
Hi! I found out the following; several permissions in the registry had been "modified" and many default "registry users" had been removed. This worked for me (since no other workaround did) so maybe this will solve your problem:
Start regedit (start > Run > Regedit). From the left window right click on "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and select Permissions. By default these are the "users" that should be listed;
- System - I granted full access from the check boxes below
- Users (this HAS to be added otherwise this will not work) - Full access
- Administrators - Full access
- Restricted Users - Full access
(Power users also, but not necessary)
If these are not listed, click the "Add" button and add the four listed above .. one by one. Remember to select full control on each.
I think this should be enough, and you can try to run regsvr32 vbscript.dll and jscript.dll
If not, (still in registry permissions) click on "advanced" button, and on this first tab, check the "Replace permissions on all..." (the checkbox at the bottom) and click ok.
It then replaces permissions on the entire Tree...
YEAH!
It sounds like your shell session didn't actually get launched with Administrator rights. Normally, when you run as Administrator, it will start in the \windows\system32 directory.
Sadly, it didn't work for me either.
Simply amazing...
HEY thanks very much for this. it worked perfectly for me as well. thanks much!
thank you so much! I just recently upgraded to Vista and was majorly bummed when iTunes wouldn't open for me. Your instructions worked, and I was able to repair my iTunes!
If you're running on Windows Vista 64bit, you need to reregister the 32bit vbscript dll. do this by following the instructions, and instead of running the command in C:\Windows\System32, do it in C:\Windows\SysWow64
So,
C:\Windows\SysWow64\Regsrv32 vbscript.dll
This worked for me (64bit Vista), although it's worth noting you have a typo that's hard to spot (v & r around the wrong way)
The correct line should look like:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64>regsvr32 vbscript.dll
(To the people who do the forum, the captcha things SUCKS it took me 10 times to get a readable one)
Thank you very much. I've been trying the other command for MONTHS and I always got the right message box, but the install would still never work. Hadn't realized it was because I had the 64bit version of Windows Vista.
Hi, can someone help me on this as i seem to be getting a similar problem to someone else. when i get to the command prompt i get the C:\users\my name on there, and can't seem to get to windows\system32, how can i do this? an idiots guide would be most appreciated...
thanks,
even though i got the error message : "RegisterServer in vbscript.dll failed. Return code was 0X80004005."
i was like,"what the heck!!"
and re-run the installation.
it jsut worked fine.
got the same thing but the installation worked for me as well
i get this same error :( Helpppppppppppppp!!
"RegisterServer in vbscript.dll failed. Return code was 0X80004005
Thanks
Bonnie

i got that same thing as other ppl, idk y it works now, it prolly just has to find the code written in the computer for it to work, but mine works just fine now, ty so much, i'm happy that i found this right away instead of having the problem of trying it for hours and days and even months, so thanx much to whoever made this forum and whoever made the corrections, it helped me out tons
thanks for that

thanks so much. I have been trying to download the 7.2 version of itunes and now it works. you are a god thanks!
thank u very much.
it was a timely help.
Keith's second instruction
cd to your windows\system32 directory
will work if you type as follows:
cd \windows\system32
Hope that helps.
Thanks very much. It worked great!!!!!
I'm experiencing the itunes error also. I typed in regsvr32 vscript.dll and got the folowing mgs:
"The module "vscript.dll" failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent
.DLL files.
The specified modules could not be found. "
Now what????????????????
I had the same problem but then discovered through trial and error that when I registered jscript.dll (i.e type: regsvr32 jscript.dll) first, you can register vbscript.dll without problems
thank alot i find this for a week
thanks a lot sir! thanks for helping me get out of this prob i ws in for hours!
I'm having the same problem as the posting on 5/30/07. I get to the black screen that says C:\users\my name and I entered cd\ ... then I got C:\> I can't seem to get to the windows/system32 directory. Can anyone tell me exactly what to type after the C:\> ???? I need the idiots guide too. Thanks!!
Never mind I got it!! At C:\> I typed in "cd c:\windows|system32" and it brought me to widows\system32 directory. Then I typed in the command and mentioned.

This information was a GOD-send. I've been working on fixing this for weeks. Your steps fixed it so easily. All the help from other sites was just a waste of time. YEEHAW! My I-Tunes is good to go. Thanks again!
Thanks a million! - finally got rid of iTunes. lol
Works great! Thanks for posting the fix. Make sure you run cmd as an administrator by right clicking. Just typing CMD in the search will not open as an administrator. Looks like most people that had a problem with this weren't running as an administrator.
Thanks again!!!
Thank you!!!! You rock!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this guiding light out of a painfully dark tunnel. Very cool and very effective cure for bewilderment. I'll email Steve Job's boyz and will ask them to include your blurb of code in their installation package. Gotta get back to having a life now . . .
THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU,
YOUR A LIFE SAVER :D
it actually works
Thank you so much, I am now able to play all the songs I purchased on itunes again!

thank you very much.
Thanks a ton. You solved a major headache for me. I would have had to buy a new one for my daughter.
Thanks so much! I was not able to log on to websites because the log on box wouldn't show up, my Mcafee security screen was blank, and I couldn't click on certain links and have them work. I've worked for 3 days on this, many hours. It was a problem on my husband's side of the computer, but not mine. Very strange. Thank you again!!!
How simple minds will be so ecstatic over a simple fix MOST pc users should know already. This also goes to show how well DELL Tech support truly is when they are thanking people for a simplistic solution they should have learned years ago. Reminds me of the time an old friend was on the phone with DELL tech support, for many hours I must say, until she told me her problem. After they couldn't figure it out, their solution... Lets format your pc and it should solve your problem. This is how DELL tech support works. I told her not to take their advise and asked if I could remotely access her pc to troubleshoot the problem myself. Working as it should in 15 mins, which DELL couldn't find another simple solution to her mic problems and wanted to do a format. Its time to head back to school if DELL tech support is thanking people for something they should have learned already. I seriously can't believe they hire people like this to help others when they need to help themselves first!
Really great! Thanks for that. Let's hope those Apple guys read your blog ;-)
yea no help all it says is vbscript.dll was loaded but call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005
please help....need itunes
wow. worked perfectly - thanks! I can't believe what Apple makes you go through just to buy a song (forcing the update and then having to go through all this to make the update work). Thanks for the tip!
Really good, it worked for me. Thanks for sharing!
Got mine working now, thank god!
Thanks
Oh my goodness thank you so much. It finally works now. YAY! That was so easy. Thank you so much. =]
Thanks for sharing the information with others, really appreciate it.
EXCELLENT I HAD PROBLEMS WITH SKY ANYTIME IN VISTA, I COULD NOT INSTALL I KEPT GETTING VBSCRIPT ERROR 2738. BUT AFTER FOLLOWING YPUR SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS I GOT IT TO INSTALL. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!
hey thanks for sharing good job keep it up
Works like a charm...thanks!!!
I personally never had any problems installing Itunes on Vista but thanks for the hack anyway
So I just tried the advice above,
When I right-click the command prompt to run as an administrator, there isn't anything that says "run as administrator". Instead, I have the choice to stay on the name i'm on (which has administrator rights) or to go to the other name that has administrator rights. I've tried both and followed all the directions, but everytime i go to the windows32 (which works) and put in the regsrv32 vbscript.dll, it comes back saying
LoadLibrary("vbscript.dll") failed- the specified module could not be found.
I also tried the whole cd C:\windows\SysWow64, and that just said that "the system cannot find the path specified.
I have absolutely no idea what to do here, since it seems to be working for everyone else and i'm beside myself in frustration, because I need the stupid ipod for a few different things really soon.
so really i'm welcoming any advice whatsoever... thanks
thank you so much...it was so easy to this but i have been going crazy trying to figure it out. thanks
